Team Biology Visits FRI. As the coach of team Biology at Ecole
Globale, I thought it would be a good idea to
take my students on a trip to the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun. The Principal
agreed to the proposal and was kind enough
to get the trip organized for us.
On 18th morning, we embarked on our trip
at 9:30 am. Ms. Afifa Hawawala, the
Computer teacher, accompanied us. As soon
as the bus stopped near the grand FRI
building and we all got down, the girls were
awestruck by the sheer grandeur of the Parthenon columns and Gothic
architecture of the building. As we wound
our way through the spacious corridors, the
old trees in the quadrangle looked worthy
of photography.
We soon walked into the Museum of Forest
Pathology. The girls were amazed to see
the gigantic fungi and the extent to which
they cause damage to the timber. They got
familiarized with the names like
mycorrhiza, polypore, heart rot, etc.
The next stop was the Timber Museum
where we had a tryst with Indian history in
the form of a slice of a seven hundred year- old tree trunk of Deodar! The tree was a sapling when
the foundation for the famous Qutub Minar was laid and was witness to various events during the
reign of Mughals and British in India.
The Xylarium, with its vast collection of wood from India and all parts of the world, was indeed a
great learning experience. The senior scientist at the Xylarium was gracious enough to show the
students the working of a microtone section cutting machine. The girls also got to see a thirty
million year- old piece of wood.
After going through the museums of social forestry, silviculture, entomology and minor forest
products, it was time to rest and replenish our energy. We all sat down on the spacious FRI
building grounds for a picnic lunch of poori-bhaaji. After a brief period of rest, it was time to take
a walk to the famous Botanical Gardens.
The rain played spoil- sport and we could
not see much. All of us had to hastily
trudge back to the main building as were
looking for cover. We sat on the steps and
waited for the bus we discussed the
various things we had seen.
It was a long, tiring and rain- soaked day,
yet the girls agreed that it was, indeed, a
great learning experience.
